DESIGN
Hi, my name is Alex Correia, but most people call me “AL”.
My design practice begins with a holistic, human-centered approach prioritizing user experience and adaptability. I work primarily on retail and restaurant environments, creating intuitive and engaging spaces that directly support business success. Flexibility and modularity are central to my design philosophy—I believe spaces should be able to evolve with the people who use them and the growth of a business. I’m often interested in exploring the interplay of light and shadow and the spatial rhythms created through the theory of compression and release. For me, every project is an opportunity to create something functional, beautiful, and inspiring.
I have been an active designer for nearly 10 years, working on both national and international projects. Being primarily self-taught, I learned and refined my skills through hands-on experience, often self-performing the fabrication and construction of spaces and fixtures I have designed. This provided an invaluable understanding of the fundamentals and realities needed to create and execute successful designs, and most importantly, mitigate risk.
I currently reside in rural Rhode Island and have recently been accepted into the Rhode Island School of Design’s Architecture Program (B.Arch) as a first-generation, non-traditional student, while also maintaining an active freelance design and consulting practice.
